Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to adapt and validate an instrument for assessing buying behavior regarding products with Warning Labels on the front labeling of packaged processed foods. The instrument was applied to Northwestern Mexican adult population. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional, and non-experimental study. The instrument by Contreras-Galleguillos et al. (2018) was adapted to 375 adults aged 30 to 60 in 28 Hermosillo, Sonora supermarkets. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine item discriminative power and valid factorial structure, using oblique rotated unweighted least squares analysis. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used for reliability. Results: Cronbach's Alpha was 0.821, the KMO measure was 0.847, and Bartlett's test of sphericity yielded χ² = 3162.088, p < 0.001. The final scale consisted of 22 items based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (α=0.821; KMO=0.847, x² = 3162.088, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The final model indicates that the instrument is valid and reliable for measuring the purchase intention in the Mexican adult population. © 2019 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Facultad de Contaduría y Administración.
