Abstract

The European Central Bank needs to be the public anchor for all euros, including retail and wholesale digital currency. Abandoning a retail version would be a mistake. The European Union needs to protect the euro’s credibility and can do this best if there is no void in the financial architecture. © The Author(s) 2026.
